The definition of "physical or mental impairment" in DOL's Section 504 regulations includes the following examples:

- Muscular dystrophy
- Multiple sclerosis
- Cancer
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Mental retardation
- Emotional illness
- Drug addiction
- Alcoholism
The definition under Section 504, as amended, specifies that this is not an exclusive list, and that other conditions may also be considered impairments.
The definition also specifies that homosexuality and bisexuality are not considered impairments.
